Renegades: Book 1

With most stories, you follow a hero through their journey. Renegades by Marissa Meyer does it a bit differently. The main character is part of a villain group. She and the people who have taken her in and brought her up are fighting back against the heroes who have crushed them under their boots. As the story progresses, things get a bit more complicated and the good versus evil dynamic gets mucked up. Not all heroes are kind and not all villains are despicable. Will Nova be able to figure out who to trust?

Good pacing, bread crumbs leading to what is to come, forbidden lovers, and mystery. This book knows how to keep you hooked and wanting more. The characters are interesting and the world is unique. I really enjoyed reading this book and discovering all that it holds.

I find this story, though it is well written, to not have many deeper meanings to discover. Once you have read it, all that is left to do is talk about it. To take a book to the next level, a rereading binge is in order, at least for me. There are some books that I have read like three or four times in a row just because I loved the story, characters, plot, background, world building, or any other number of things that much and just wanted to feel immersed in the story once more. That is something that this book lacks.

You could read the next book in this series, Archememies. Other books similar to this are Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo because both books have characters infiltrating enemy territory, Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas because they both have a mystery to uncover while trying to hide their true identity, and Red Rising by Pierce Brown because the main character also is infiltrating the enemy and stubbing across people who really care for him amongst them.
