Legendborn: Book 1

A normal girl goes with a friend to a before college program. Her mother just died and she needs to get out of her hometown. With a taste of freedom, she goes to a college party and sees some things that she was never meant to see. Is this all just a dream or are there really people is secret powers fighting hidden monsters all around her?

Recently I have been struggling to get myself to pick anything up at all nevermind to finish a book. I did pick this one up, but I really struggled to stay engaged with it despite really enjoying the plot and the different take on a magic system from what I understood. I felt like things went really slow and that there was quite a bit of down time that nothing was really happening. I know that this can be a great strategy to build tension and develop relationships, but I tend to prefer a fast paced book. I will definitely try to pick this book up again at another point, but for now it is a DNF.

If you liked this book, the next in the series is Blookmarked by Tracy Deonn. Other books like this one: The Young Elites by Marie Lu because they both have secret societies, Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard because both have mentor/mentee relationships, and The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent because of the sexual tension and slowly built relationships.
