After erasing Liam’s memory of herself, Rudy has to fully pretend to be involved with The Children’s League so that they will not go after him. Her current mission is to recuse an asset from PSF. With a Leader who despises all those with supernatural abilities and a partner who hates her guts, Ruby is left to try and prevent too much death. Who is the asset and why did the League make an exception for them to be rescued?
Let’s talk about the main characters! Vida is one of my favorite characters, right up there with Chubs. While Vida is fiery and passionate, Chubs is reasonable, protective, and intelligent. They both care deeply for those close to them and will do anything in their power to keep those who they love most close to them. Liam is a great leader and visionary. He is incredibly understanding and has such a big heart. Zu is gentle and smart. She wants so badly to be normal and keep her found family close. Ruby is terrified of herself and anxious about the world, but she is fiercely protective. Jude is a bundle of energy and fear, but is so sweet. He just burrows right into your heart. Nico is quiet and does not really talk, but he loves his friends and is working through his trauma.
This book tore my heart out multiple times over. There were so many low moments and only a handful of high points. This book is definitely a middle book in a series, but not in a bad way. It builds tension for the third book while also feeling like the characters got somewhere through this one.
If you liked this book, the next book in the series is In The Afterlight by Alexandra Bracken. Other books like this one are: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo because they both have heist elements, Witch & Wizard by James Patterson because of the total control the government suddenly has over everyone and the magic, and Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi because both main characters fear others and are feared themselves.
