Xaden was left with no choice but to wield beyond his limit to save Violet. With that one action, he doomed himself to becoming a dark wielder. Violet is doing everything in her power to hold him together. Only Garrick, Bodhi, Violet and Imogen know that Xaden is a dark wielder and are working together to keep him under control. With Violet’s mother’s death, the battle just having settled at Basgiath, and there being fliers in their territory willing to help out against the dark wielders, there is still plenty of conflict sturing both inside and outside of Basgiath. What is going to happen to Xaden? Will there be any understanding between gryphons and dragons? How are they going to train to fight dark wielders?

Here were my thoughts at the midway point. This book has held so many twists and turns so far. I dearly hope that Xaden will be able to keep it together, but I fear that he will end up dragging Violet into more danger with the dark wielders. The Irids were not what I hoped they would be. Getting a peak at the different islands was really cool and I loved the world building. Each island had such a different feel and its people felt very different depending on which god they served.
Here are my thoughts at around the three quarters mark. Violet’s new power is dangerous. Being able to walk into other’s dreams is something that, if it is found out, will get her quickly killed since it is a security risk. Getting Andarna’s bond taken away from her caused serious mental damage. I cannot believe that the Irid made Andarna do that to Violet. Xaden was moody for quite some time, but he has finally started to trust Violet. Getting their shields boasted by the Irids will keep them safer for longer and allow them to better protect the citizens that they are bringing under their protection. Quinn’s death hit hard.
Here are my thoughts after finishing the book. I can't believe the ending! What happened with Violet and Xaden? Why did she ask Imogen to erase her memory? Why are there eggs missing? Why did they get married? What happened while Violet was missing? Is Xaden gone forever? What happened at the end of the battle? Why did Andarna suddenly appear? Is she still with Violet? Are the Irids with Brennden? I'm so confused! There are so many loose ends! I need to know more!
If you liked this book, there will be another book and a TV series. Other books like this one are: Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken because both of the main characters are smart and resourceful, The Young Elites by Marie Lu because both of the main characters are relentless, and The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent because both main characters will not let others fight in their place no matter what others think about them.
