Lady Smoke: Book 2

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

Theo burned Cress with Encatrio, a poison, and feels horrible for doing this to her friend. We see her go back and forth in her mind trying to justify what she was forced into doing, but also still seeing Cress as some sort of lost friend. Despite how Cress was complacent as Theo was beaten and abused by those around her, Theo still wants to see her as a person who had wanted what was best for her and actually cared about her. To top this off, Theo is also worried about her best friend Blaise who has been having a fever and displaying uncontrollable power. She had also taken Soren, the prince of the empire, captive at the end of the last book. The problem here is that she has feelings for both him and Blaise for very different reasons and to differing degrees.

This book is so interesting and fun. I love how Theo grows as a character here and starts to find herself. I love how she finally gets to leave the palace and start exploring how to take back her kingdom. All the characters grow so much and the relationships grow more complex. It is really such a fun read.

There is one final book in this series: Ember Queen by Laura Sebastian. Other books like this one are The Kiss of Deception from The Remnant Chronicles by Mary E. Pearson because of the similarly daring tale, Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard because of the similarly curious main characters, and Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi because of the similar character growth throughout the series.
