In this world where there are two types of people, silvers and reds, and where there has been a war raging for ages, we meet our main character, Mare. She is a red who lives in the stilts and has been looking for a job so that she will not get drafted like her older brothers and her father into the endless war. Right now though, Mare picks pockets to help get her family money while her younger sister sews. Her sister ends up getting Mare a job in the palace as a cleaner. On her first day, the royals, who are silvers, are holding a fight to see which candidate will be the next queen. The candidate is chosen based on their power level. During this intense fight, Mare ends up falling into the pit which has an electric net on top. To her surprise, and the surprise of everyone watching, Mare does not die. She actually gets powers. How is this possible? What will the silvers do?
This book is a whole journey. I loved the tension that the author created and the intense atmosphere. The way the characters interact is so entertaining and makes you want to keep reading. There is so much mystery and wonder to the world as well as care with how it is displayed. This book is just the beginning of Mare’s journey, though. With mystery, magic, romance, and pure fear, this book is captivating and impossible to put down.
If you enjoy this book, you could read the next in the series, Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard. Other books like this series are Seven Devils by Laura Lam and Elizabeth May, A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy by Sarah J. Maas because the two main characters both are pulled into worlds they do not fully understand and are forced to figure them out, and the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas because they are both forced to fight for their freedom.
