Shatter Me: Book 1

Updated: Aug 22

It took me quite a while to build up the courage to pick this book up. I think had seen it all over Booktok and had heard many people suggest it. Once I finally started, I found out why it was so highly suggested. This book shines in a sea of sci-fi and dystopian YA books. The main character has the power to kill anyone she touches and has accidentally gotten herself locked up in a mental asylum. She has been severely under cared for and has had no human interaction since she came to this place up. That is until now. For some reason, the asylum has decided to give her a male roommate who has little to no clue what is going on. Why did they decide to do this? Will she ever experience the outdoors ever again?

I love how this story shows how dark a world like this can be not only through descriptions, but also with strikethroughs to show what Juliette, the main character, actually means versus what she wishes was true. It helps the audience to see how much the isolation and silence has affected her. As the story progresses, we can see how it changes her thoughts and actions. I couldn't put this book down.

The way that this world was built is fantastic. There was so much thought about how the world could change and how the dystopia could be formed. The characters are well thought out and the story flows really nicely. It is incredibly fast paced and keeps you on your toes. Everything is well set up yet unpredictable. I cannot say enough about how much I enjoyed reading this book!

If you enjoy this book, you could read the next in the series, Unravel Me Tahereh Mafi. Other books like this series are: the Darkest Minds series by Alexandra Bracken, the Shadow and Bone series by Leigh Bardugo, and the Cinder series by Marissa Meyer.
