Adelina was abused by her father and killed him. She had thought that she had found another family with the Dagger Society, but they have turned against her. Adelina is also on the run from the Inquisition and Teren Santoro since she freed her sister, Violetta. Since she was kicked out of the Dagger Society, Adelina has decided to form her own group called the Rose Society with Violetta. Will Adelina be able to cling to the good in herself despite her powers depending on darkness and madness?
I really enjoyed this tragic sequel. The parallels to addiction have strengthened in this book. Adelina has been struggling heavily with her dependence on her powers and her fear of abandonment. Her safety net being taken out from under her has not helped at all and is only dragging her farther from into madness. Violetta has the ability to save her, but Adelina is terrified of it. She has found people who are willing to enable her to a certain extent and use her. Turning back is not an option, but continuing forward is only going to lead to more devastation and destruction of relationships. Hopefully she will get through this.
If you enjoyed this book, you should check out the next book in the series, The Midnight Star by Marie Lu. Other books like this one are: The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson because both main characters are betrayed by those close to them, Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman because both characters cannot avoid their destructive habits, and Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins because both main characters have serious mental health problems caused by circumstances in their respective stories.
