Aelin has finally arrived on Terrasen soil after years of being away. Chaol is heading to the South Continent so that he might have a chance to have his legs healed. When will Aelin regain control over her kingdom? Will Elide be alright? Will Manon fight back against Erawan? What will happen with Chaol and Nesryn?

With the focus off of Aelin and instead on Chaol and Nesryn, I felt a little lost and bored. I like how this book gave Chaol people he could talk to and gave him more development. The treatment of Chaol’s injury kinda annoys me. I understand hating your injury and wanting to change it, but it felt like the characters thought that Chaol was less than because of his injury. I wanted to get to see some good disability representation, but that did not happen here. Overall this book was hard to get through and I really just wanted to get back to the main story with Aelin, figure out what was happening to Elide, and get to know Manon more. It just felt like a detour instead of something that fit with the rest of the series. Not the worst book I have ever read, but definitely not my favorite.
If you enjoyed this book, the next in the series is Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas. Other books like this one are: The Beauty of Darkness by Mary E. Pearson because of the deception and deep connections that are made, The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent because both are willing to do whatever it takes to keep those close to them safe, and Ember Queen by Laura Sebastian because both main characters are willing to risk it all.
