Heartless

Updated: Oct 10, 2023

Do you remember Wonderland? Well this book takes place in that world. Our main character, Catherine, is from the kingdom of Hearts. She is a baker who hopes to one day open a bakery with her maid, Mary Ann, despite knowing that her parents would never approve of that line of work for their daughter. That day there is a ball that she will be going to and her mother ends up making her wear red which is against the black and white ball theme. It pays off though since she does dance with the King and he does love her lemon tarts that she made her late to the ball. She sees the new Joker perform and chats with others for a bit. Catherine hears from Cheshire, who appears at the ball, that the king is planning on proposing to someone which scares Catherine into running to the rose garden. She ends up meeting Jest, the jester, in the garden and falling for him, literally. How will this turn out?

Sadly, this book does not have a sequel, but it is still one of my favorites! I have always enjoyed wonderland and its characters and this story gives the whole thing a new twist. It is interesting and captivating, but does not go on for long. With the total length of this story being 480 pages, there is so much that happens in that short period of time. The whole thing is well paced and entertaining. A worthwhile read.

Other books similar to this one are: Seven Devils by Laura Lam and Elizabeth May because they both share different worlds, Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard because of how action packed they both are, and A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas because they both end up in a situation that the main characters never initially wanted but end up loving.
